Love Yourself First – Even When Your Dog Won’t Let You Sleep!

“How you love yourself is how you teach others to love you.” – Rupi Kaur
Valentine’s Day is all about love, but let’s be honest—what we often need most is some self-love and deep, uninterrupted sleep. And in my house lately? That’s been in short supply.
Our lovely Digby dog has recently decided that possums are a grave national security threat, requiring urgent midnight barking alerts. Every. Single. Night. So, naturally, I’ve found myself addressing not just my sleep hygiene, but his as well. I’ve even considered slipping a little of our special chamomile tea into his evening water—because if I can’t sleep, I'm not happy, and if he can’t sleep, no one sleeps!
Why Sleep is the Ultimate Act of Self-Love
Sleep isn’t just about feeling rested—it’s the foundation of mental clarity, emotional balance, and physical health. Without it, everything feels harder. (Including finding the patience to lovingly explain to your four-legged friend that possums are not an imminent threat.)
When we skimp on sleep, we: Increase stress and anxiety Struggle with focus and decision-making Mess with our hormones (hello, sugar cravings and irritability!) Age faster (yep, sleep is free Botox)
How I’m Prioritising My Own Sleep (Even with a Vata Brain & a Possum-Obsessed Dog)
As a 57-year-old super Vata woman, my mind naturally races at night. If I don’t actively prepare for sleep, I’ll be lying there thinking about everything from course creation to whether my dog actually sees ghosts.
So, here’s what’s been working for me:
A Proper Wind-Down Routine – No screens before bed (because we all know one innocent scroll can turn into a deep dive on holistic beekeeping in Norway).
Magnesium & Adaptogens – I love NeuroCalm Sleep—it helps quiet my busy mind and gives me the deep, delicious rest I need. (Highly recommend if you’re a fellow overthinker or light sleeper!) Check it out here
Gentle Evening Yoga – A few stretches, some deep breathing… and trying to get the dog to settle before he launches his next possum patrol.
Boundaries with My Dog! – Considering earplugs. Or therapy. For both of us.
